CONTACT

OUR MISSION

Founded in 2007, the Northwest Indiana Lutheran Hispanic Mission Society brings together congregations and individuals to cultivate friendship with Spanish-speaking people in our region.

The Society conducts events and programs throughout the year that promote cross-cultural understanding and friendship in the region, including an annual Cinco de Mayo event and the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) on Good Friday.

The Society supports the work of two missionaries, Pastor Tomas Angon and Pastor Juan Garcia. Both are ordained ministers of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Pastor Angon leads Gloria Dei, a Spanish-speaking Lutheran congregation in Valparaiso. Pastor Garcia leads Sunday worship services in Spanish at Trinity Lutheran in Crown Point.

OUR PARTNERS

COMPASS INTERNATIONAL FAMILY CENTER

In 2007, Gloria Dei Hispanic Mission and the Northwest Indiana Lutheran Hispanic Mission Society started up a variety of classes to serve the local Hispanic community.  In 2017, Compass became an independent 501c3 non-profit organization but continues to enjoy a close partnership with the Mission Society.

While the original emphasis was primarily on caring for Hispanic immigrants, today the program has expanded to support the needs of all local immigrants, refugees, and international student families. Compass welcomes families from approximately 35 different countries, speaking more than 15 different languages.

Compass meets at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Tuesday and Thursday evenings during the school year.  Participants of all ages and backgrounds attend one of the following areas of support: Adult English (multiple levels), Citizenship classes, GED Tutoring, K-12 Tutoring, English Learner Preschool classes, or childcare for our youngest participants.
